FIRST GUEST: Jimmy Charles, Nashville recording artist and spokesman for Zero: The End of Prostate Cancer

Zero: The End of Prostate Cancer is teaming up with former American Idol contestant and current Nashville recording artist Jimmy Charles to help put an end to prostate cancer, a disease that affects one in seven American men.

Back in season 9 of Idol, Jimmy was out in Hollywood competing among the best singers in the country. But coming up on Saturday, May 30th, he’ll be in Joliet to perform during the 4th annual Zero Prostate Cancer Run/Walk, which will raise funds for research and programs to fight prostate cancer. They’ll even have a Kids Superhero Dash for Dad!

Through his new song Superman, Jimmy’s been able to reach so many people who have been affected by a loved one dealing with the burden of being sick. This hits close to home for the singer, who lost his father unexpectedly during the recording process of the song.

“It’s like a bomb explodes in your life,” Jimmy says of losing his dad. “You’re in shock.”

Rather than shutting out the world and wallowing, Jimmy was able to find the strength to use those emotions and pour them in the song. And in a way, his dad helped him do that. In fact, years ago when Jimmy first dabbled in music? That was because of his father.

“He was the one who put the first guitar in my hand,” explains Jimmy. “He’s the reason why I know so many traditional country music songs. And he’s the reason why I’m here in Nashville, and he’s the reason this song came about.”

Perhaps as a tribute to Jimmy’s own father, his hero, the official music video for Superman will be released on Father’s Day.

But you can hear the song and many others performed live on May 30th in Joliet, as hundreds of people will gather together in an effort to end prostate cancer.

Dr. Henry Wiley of the National Eye Institute offers his top 5 tips to keep our eyes safe and healthy, the most important of which is to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam.

He also reminds us that living a healthy lifestyle and knowing our family history can be huge benefits to our eye health.

And don’t forget to wear protective eyewear like safety goggles or sunglasses that block harmful UV-A and UV-B rays.
